ChatGPT SEO tools: check, track and improve how ChatGPT sees you
Ranking on Google and being named by ChatGPT are two different outcomes, and only one of them shows up in a rank tracker. These tools measure the other one: whether ChatGPT can reach your site, whether it can read it well enough to quote, and whether it actually cites you when someone asks a question you should own.
How ChatGPT chooses sources
ChatGPT answers from two places, and the difference decides which work is worth doing. Some answers come from what the model already learned during training, which is fixed until the next training run. Others come from live retrieval: the model runs a search, fetches a handful of pages, reads them, and writes an answer from what it found. Retrieval is the half you can influence this week, and it is where the guesswork stops.
Retrieval starts with a crawler. OpenAI runs several, and they do different jobs. GPTBot gathers content that may be used for training. OAI-SearchBot is the one that populates search results inside ChatGPT. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user's question needs it right now. Blocking all three in robots.txt is a decision plenty of sites made without meaning to, and blocking OAI-SearchBot is the expensive one, because it removes you from the answers being written today rather than from a future model.
Once a page is fetched, it competes on how easy it is to quote. An answer engine is looking for a passage it can lift with confidence and attribute. That favours pages with one clear subject, headings that name the question being answered, a direct answer near the top rather than after six paragraphs of preamble, and structured data that states plainly what the page is about. It also favours pages that agree with other sources, because a claim corroborated elsewhere is safer to repeat.
None of that is exotic, and most of it is ordinary technical groundwork done properly. The reason it needs its own tooling is that the feedback loop is invisible. A page can rank third on Google, be perfectly crawlable, and still never be named, and nothing in a conventional SEO report will tell you that happened.
Free ChatGPT visibility check
Enter a domain and this reads the live page, its robots.txt and its llms.txt, then scores eleven signals that decide whether ChatGPT and other answer engines can reach the page, understand it, and quote it. It names which AI crawlers are allowed, whether the page carries structured data, whether the heading structure is clean, and which fixes are worth doing first. No account, no credit card.

Tracking your position in ChatGPT answers
A ChatGPT rank tracker cannot work the way a Google one does, and any tool that claims a position number for a ChatGPT answer is inventing it. ChatGPT does not return a ranked list of ten links. It returns one answer, and either your brand is in it or it is not.
What can be measured is share of voice across prompts. Take the questions your customers actually ask, run them on a schedule, and record four things each time: whether you were mentioned, whether you were cited with a link, which URL was cited, and which competitor was named if you were not. Do that for a few weeks and you have a trend that behaves like a rank, because it moves when you fix something and it moves when a competitor does.
| Question | Google rank tracking | ChatGPT prompt tracking |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | A keyword | A prompt, phrased the way a person would ask it |
| Result | A position from 1 to 100 | Mentioned or not, cited or not |
| Competitors | Everyone on the page, in order | Whoever the answer chose to name, usually two or three |
| Why you moved | Rankings, links, content, technical health | Whether you were retrieved, and whether you were quotable once you were |
| How fast it moves | Days to weeks | Days for retrieval answers, a training cycle for the rest |
| In Metric Vault | Daily position tracking | Prompt tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude |
Both live in the same workspace, so a ranking drop and a lost citation sit on the same screen instead of in two products.
How to get cited by ChatGPT
Being mentioned and being cited are not the same thing, and the second is worth more. A mention is your brand name in a sentence. A citation is a link back to your page, which is the only version of this that sends you a visitor.
Citations go to pages that are easy to verify. In practice that means three things. The page has to be fetchable by OAI-SearchBot, which is the crawler feeding answers rather than the one gathering training data. The claim has to be stated somewhere a passage can be lifted whole, rather than assembled from four paragraphs. And the same claim should be findable somewhere that is not your site, because a model deciding what to link to leans on what more than one source says.
The last one is the part most teams skip, and it is the reason a well-optimised page can stay uncited for months. If your product claim exists only on your own site, there is nothing to corroborate it with, and the model has no reason to prefer your page to a review site that says the same thing.
How to rank in ChatGPT: 7 steps
This is the order that gets results, because each step is worthless until the one above it is done. There is no point writing quotable content on a site the crawler cannot reach, and no SEO tools for ChatGPT can measure a page it never fetched.
-
1
Let the crawlers in. Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. If you only unblock one, make it OAI-SearchBot: that is the one feeding answers today. The check above tells you which are currently allowed.
-
2
Answer the question in the first paragraph. Answer engines lift passages. A page that states its answer plainly before the background is far easier to quote than one that builds to it, and the passage that gets lifted is usually the one nearest the top.
-
3
Give every page one clear subject. One H1, headings that name real questions, and no page trying to cover four topics at once. Ambiguity is the enemy: a model that cannot tell what a page is about will not risk citing it.
-
4
Add structured data. Schema markup states what your entities are rather than leaving them to be inferred. FAQPage, Article, Organization and Product are the ones that matter most, and they are the strongest single signal you can add in an afternoon.
-
5
Publish an llms.txt. A short file at the root that points answer engines at the pages you want read. It is cheap, it is becoming a convention, and it costs nothing if a given engine ignores it.
-
6
Get corroborated elsewhere. Models prefer claims they can see in more than one place. Mentions on sites the model already trusts, consistent naming across your own pages, and matching details in your Organization schema all reduce the risk of quoting you.
-
7
Track the prompts, then repeat. Pick twenty questions you should own, track them weekly, and treat every prompt where a competitor is named as a content brief. This is the step that turns the previous six from a checklist into a loop.
How to rank higher in ChatGPT once the basics are done
The seven steps get you into the answer. Moving up inside it is a different problem, and it is mostly about being the easiest source to agree with. Tighten the sentence that states your claim so it can be quoted without editing, put a number or a date in it where you honestly can, and get the same claim onto one page you do not own. Brands named early in an answer tend to be the ones the model found stated the same way in more than one place.
