The Chrome extension
Install the Metric Vault browser extension, read a domain's quick view from any page, and use the authority badges on Google and Bing results.

Summary#
The Metric Vault extension puts a domain's SEO position one click away from any page you are already on. Click the toolbar icon and a panel shows that domain's authority score, estimated monthly visits, top keywords, top backlinks and detected technology. On Google and Bing results pages it also adds a small authority badge beside each organic result, so you can read the competitive landscape of a search without opening anything.
Purpose#
Competitive research usually breaks your flow. You are reading a competitor's page, or scanning a results page, and checking one number means opening a different tool, pasting the domain, and losing your place. The extension removes that round trip for the small questions, and hands the big ones to the full dashboard with one more click.
It is deliberately shallow. It answers "is this domain worth my attention" in two seconds. Anything past that belongs in a real tool, which is why every panel ends with links straight into one.
Requirements#
- Google Chrome, or another browser that installs Chrome Web Store extensions.
- A Metric Vault account for the full reports the extension links to.
Permissions#
The extension asks for two browser permissions and access to three sites. That is the entire list.
| Permission | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
activeTab | Read the web address of the tab you are currently on, so the panel knows which domain to look up |
storage | Keep recent lookups in your browser so the same domain is not fetched twice |
| Access to metricvaultai.com | Fetch the data, and let the dashboard know the extension is installed |
| Access to google.com and bing.com | Run the badge overlay on search results pages |
It does not read your browsing history, does not run on any other site, and sends nothing anywhere except to metricvaultai.com.
The overlay script runs only on Google and Bing search results pages. A second, tiny script runs on metricvaultai.com for one purpose: to mark that the extension is installed, so the site stops offering you the install banner.
Navigation Path#
Chrome toolbar → Metric Vault icon
The icon's tooltip reads Metric Vault — SEO Quickview.
Step-by-Step Guide#
Install it#
- Open the Chrome Web Store listing at <https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/macfgcdhiennkcmhhejbmcgifhbjjkcc>. The listing is titled Metric Vault — Instant SEO Intelligence.
- Click Add to Chrome and confirm.
- The Metric Vault icon appears in your toolbar. Pin it if Chrome hides it behind the extensions menu.
You can also reach the listing from the Chrome extension link in the footer of any Metric Vault page, or from the banner that reads Get the Metric Vault browser extension – audit any page as you browse.
Read a quick view#
- Open any normal web page.
- Click the Metric Vault icon.
- The panel opens showing the domain of the current tab, its favicon, and
Analyzing domain…while it works. - The result fills in, and the time indicator next to the domain reads
just now, or how long ago the stored copy was taken.
Use the search results overlay#
- Search on google.com or bing.com.
- Each organic result gains a small badge next to its title reading Metric Vault, with a score at the end. It shows
…while loading. - Hover a badge to see the domain, its authority score and its estimated monthly visits.
- Click a badge to open that domain in the Metric Vault dashboard in a new tab.
The overlay watches the page for new results, so badges also appear on results loaded after you scroll.
Signing in#
The extension has no sign-in screen of its own, and it does not carry your Metric Vault session into its lookups. There is nothing to log into and no setting to configure.
Quick views work without an account. They are not attributed to anyone and they do not deduct credits from your allowance. Click Full analysis at the bottom of the panel to open the same domain in the dashboard, where you are signed in and the full tool set is available.
Because the lookups are anonymous, they are limited per network rather than per account. A shared office or campus connection can reach that limit between several people; it clears within the hour and nothing is charged for it.
What the panel shows#
| Section | What it is |
|---|---|
| Authority | A 0 to 100 score built from the domain's real organic visibility and backlink strength. Red under 30, amber to 59, green from 60 |
| Monthly Visits | Estimated monthly organic visits, with a 12-month trend line. Where the provider has real history for the domain, the line is that history. Where it does not, the line is an indicative shape sized to the current figure, so read its direction as decoration rather than data |
| AI Visibility | A 0 to 100 composite of top-three ranking share, backlink strength and referring-domain authority. It is a derived signal, not a measured hit rate in ChatGPT or Perplexity |
| Keyword intent mix | The share of the domain's top keywords that read as commercial, informational, navigational or transactional, weighted by search volume |
| Top Keywords | Up to 5 keywords the domain ranks well for, each with its position and search volume. A keyword whose volume is wildly out of line with the rest is flagged so you verify it in the full report |
| Top Backlinks | Up to 3 referring domains with an authority pill. Click the arrow to open the source site |
| Tech Stack | Detected technologies, up to 8 |
| A one-line summary | Written from the measured figures above and nothing else |
| Full audit, Content gaps, VS rival | Open the dashboard on this domain, pre-set to Domain Overview, Gap Finder or Competitor Battle |
Clicking any keyword row opens Keyword Overview in the dashboard for that keyword. The footer buttons Full analysis and Dashboard both open Metric Vault, the first pinned to the current domain.
Where a section has no data, it is left out rather than filled with a placeholder. An empty backlinks or tech section means the provider returned nothing for that domain, which is common for very new or very small sites. See Where the data comes from for what stands behind these numbers.
How results are stored#
Three separate stores keep the extension fast without holding data longer than it is useful.
| Store | Lifetime |
|---|---|
| The panel's copy of a domain, in your browser | 1 hour |
| The overlay's copy of a domain, in your browser | 30 minutes |
| The lookup on the Metric Vault side, shared across everyone | 24 hours |
A background cleanup runs every six hours and removes anything older than six hours from the browser store. The time next to the domain name in the panel tells you which copy you are reading: just now for a fresh fetch, or 12m ago, 3h ago, 2d ago for a stored one.
Because a lookup is stored for 24 hours on the Metric Vault side, two people checking the same domain on the same day get the same answer. Clearing the browser's copy does not force a new fetch inside that window.
Limitations#
- It does not analyze browser-internal pages. Chrome's own settings, the extensions page and blank tabs have no domain to look up.
- It analyses the domain, not the page. The panel reports on the whole site, not the individual URL you are looking at.
- The overlay only runs on google.com and bing.com search pages. No other search engine is covered.
- The overlay attaches to organic results only. Ads, map packs and Google's own panels are skipped.
- There is no history, no saving and no export in the extension. Use the dashboard for anything you need to keep. See Saved Work.
- AI Visibility in the panel is a derived score. For measured AI answer coverage, use the AI visibility tools in the app. See Visibility Overview.
- Data is queried for Google in the United States, in English, as it is everywhere else in the product.
Troubleshooting#
| Message or symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
QuickView has hit its hourly limit for your network. It resets within the hour. | Quick views are anonymous, so the limit counts your whole network, not you | Wait for the hour to turn over, or use Full analysis to run it in the dashboard against your own allowance |
Metric Vault cannot analyze browser-internal pages. | You are on a chrome://, edge://, about: or extension page | Switch to a normal web page |
This URL does not have a valid domain. | The tab's address has no host to read | Switch to a normal web page |
No active tab found. | The panel could not read the current tab | Close and reopen the panel |
No SEO data available for this domain. | The data provider has nothing for that domain. Common for very new or very small sites | Not a fault. Try a larger domain to confirm the extension works |
invalid domain | The domain did not pass validation | Check the address in the tab |
SEO data source not configured | The search data provider is not available on the platform | Contact support. See Contacting support |
Network error: followed by a reason | The request never reached Metric Vault | Check your connection and click Retry |
Badges on Google all show ? | The lookups did not return data | Open the panel on one of those domains to see the underlying message |
| No badges on a results page at all | You are not on a google.com/search or bing.com/search page | The overlay runs only on those |
| Numbers look stale | You are reading a stored copy | Check the time indicator next to the domain name |
| The icon does not appear | Chrome hid it behind the extensions menu | Open the extensions menu and pin Metric Vault |
FAQs#
Does it cost credits? No. Quick views are not charged against your credit allowance. Anything you then run in the dashboard is charged normally. See How credits work.
Do I need a paid plan? No. The extension itself is free. Some of the tools it links into require a paid plan.
Does it track my browsing? No. It reads the address of the tab you are on only when you open the panel, or the domains listed on a Google or Bing results page when you are on one. Nothing else is read and nothing is sent anywhere except to metricvaultai.com.
Does it work in Edge, Brave or Arc? Those browsers install Chrome Web Store extensions, and the extension uses no Chrome-only feature beyond the standard extension platform. Only Chrome is tested.
Why does the dashboard stop showing the install banner? The extension marks the page as soon as it loads, and the site reads that mark. That is the only thing the script on metricvaultai.com does.
Why is the authority score different from the one in Domain Overview? They are computed for different purposes. The panel's score is a fast composite built to be readable at a glance. Domain Overview does the full analysis. Where they disagree, trust the tool. See Domain Overview.
How do I remove it? Open chrome://extensions/, find Metric Vault and click Remove. Nothing is left behind on the Metric Vault side, because nothing about you was stored there. See Disconnecting an integration.
