Export and sharing problems

Symptom-first diagnosis for exports that produce nothing, PDFs that look wrong, missing branding, share links that will not open, and saved work you cannot find.

Last updated 2026-08-06

Summary#

Almost every export or sharing problem has one of four causes: the result was not finished, you are on a surface that does not produce what you expected, the content does not suit the format you chose, or the branding was saved after the link was created. This page walks the symptoms in that order. For the complete list of every export and share message and what it means, see Export or PDF problems.

Symptoms#

  • An export button does nothing, or a dialog says there is nothing to export.
  • A PDF downloads but a section you can see on screen is missing.
  • A PDF or spreadsheet contains no charts.
  • A CSV is nearly empty although the report is full.
  • Export All on Report History opened a print dialog instead of downloading a file.
  • A share link opens Report not found or Report expired.
  • A share page is missing a chart that was on screen.
  • A share page shows Metric Vault branding instead of yours.
  • An exported file shows Metric Vault branding instead of yours.
  • A result you ran last week is not in Saved Work.
  • You want to take a share link down and cannot find how.

Diagnosis#

1. Is the result finished?#

Exports and share links are built from the result in front of you. While a tool is running there is only a loading block to read, and an errored or over-quota result is not a report. Wait until the result has rendered completely, then act.

Keyword Overview enforces this for you: its export buttons stay dim with the tooltip Run the analysis first until a finished result exists, and dim again the moment a new run starts. Other tools let you press the button and answer with Nothing to export instead.

2. Which surface are you on?#

This is the most common source of surprise. The same word means different things in different places.

Where you areWhat the button produces
A tool result, Export PDF / Excel / CSV / JSONA downloaded file
A tool result, Share public linkA public web page, not a file
Dashboard overview export rowA downloaded file summarizing the overview
Report History, Export AllYour browser's print dialog. It writes no CSV or JSON file
Saved-result viewer, Download JSONA JSON file of that saved run
A public share pageNothing. Share pages carry no export controls

If you wanted a file and got a print dialog, you were on Report History. Use the per-tool export buttons, or Download JSON from the saved result. See Exporting results and Report history.

3. Does the format suit the content?#

Each format is a different view of the same report.

FormatStrong onWeak on
PDFWhole reports for people to readNothing; it carries every section it can model
ExcelMulti-section reports, one sheet eachNarrative sections
CSVOne flat table for an importReports made of cards, charts and prose
JSONEverything, for machinesHuman readability

A result made of cards and prose has little for CSV to write, which is why the same screen can give you a good PDF and a thin CSV. Charts are written out as their data tables in every file format; they are only preserved visually on a share page. See Charts and visualizations.

A share page is branded at the moment it is created. Saving branding afterwards does not reach back and change pages you already published. And downloaded files carry Metric Vault's own header and footer regardless of your branding settings, because the branded surface is the share page. See White-label reports.

5. Is the result still within retention?#

Saved results are kept for 90 days and then removed. A run you cannot find may simply be older than that. See Saving a result.

Resolution#

Nothing exports#

  1. Confirm the result has finished rendering. No spinner, no red error panel, no quota note.
  2. Press the export button again.
  3. If you see PDF engine is still loading. Try again in a moment. or the Excel equivalent, wait a second and click again. The libraries load after the page.
  4. If you see Nothing to export / "Run the tool first, then export the result.", try Export JSON, which is the one format that still produces a download when the on-screen result cannot be modelled.

The file is missing something#

  1. A whole section is missing. Exports build from the visible report plus the underlying data, and sections behind a category tab are included. If a section is genuinely absent, note the tool name and the section heading and report it. See Contacting support.
  2. The charts are missing. They are not missing; they are tables. Look for the chart's section heading in the document body.
  3. A CSV is thin. Use Excel, which keeps each section on its own sheet, or PDF for the whole report.
What the reader seesMeaningWhat to do
Report not found / "This report link is invalid or has been deleted."The URL is wrong or the report has been removedCheck for a truncated or wrapped URL, then send a fresh link
Report expired / "This shared report has expired."The link carried an expiry that has passedCreate a new link
A blank or partial pageThe link was copied incompletelyRe-copy the URL with the Copy button in the share dialog

Create a replacement with Share public link on the result, press Preview to check it, and send the new URL. See Sharing a result by link.

A share page is missing a chart#

Charts are captured at the moment you create the link, and a chart that had not drawn is dropped along with its heading rather than published as an empty frame. Scroll the chart into view on the result, let it finish animating, then create the link again.

Branding is not showing#

  1. Check your plan. Saving branding needs Pro or above; below that the save is refused with This feature requires the Pro plan. Your account is on Free. Upgrade to unlock it.
  2. Open Dashboard → Account & Team → Integrations → White-label Branding and confirm your settings are there. If you uploaded a logo but never pressed Save branding, nothing was stored.
  3. Fix the two validation failures if you see them: Logo too large — keep it under 500KB and Colors must be hex format (e.g. #7c5cfc).
  4. Create a new share link. Existing pages keep the branding they were created with.
  5. If the file you downloaded is unbranded, that is expected. Send a branded share link when the deliverable must carry only your brand. See White-label reports and Custom branding.

You cannot find a saved result#

  1. Open Library → Saved Work and open the tool's folder.
  2. Clear the search box and set the tool filter back to All tools. A stale filter is the usual cause of No matches.
  3. Press Load more if the list is long; it loads 30 at a time.
  4. If it is still missing, check the age. Results older than 90 days are removed.
  5. Very large results are not written to Saved Work at all, although they render normally at the time. Export those on the day you run them. See Saving a result.

There is no screen in the app that lists or deletes your share links. Email support@metricvaultai.com with the full URL and ask for it to be removed. Deleting the saved result in your Library does not remove the page, and neither does cancelling a subscription. See Sharing a result by link.

Prevention#

  • Let the result settle before you click. Most export failures are a click that arrived a second early.
  • Choose the format for the reader. PDF or a link for people, Excel or CSV for spreadsheets, JSON for systems.
  • Set up branding before your first client link, not after a batch has gone out.
  • Preview every share link before sending it. The share dialog has a Preview button for exactly this.
  • Export anything you need beyond 90 days on the day you run it.
  • Treat share links as permanent and public. They do not expire and they cannot be switched off from the app, so send a file when the content is sensitive.
  • Scroll a report to the bottom once before creating a link, so every chart has drawn.
