Removing a member
How to remove a teammate or cancel a pending invite, what they lose immediately, and what happens to their work.
Last updated 2026-08-06
Summary#
Removing a teammate ends their access to your workspace immediately and frees the seat straight away. It is the same action for an active member and for a pending invite, and cancelling a pending invite is also what invalidates the invite link. Removal is not reversible in the sense of an undo, but re-inviting the person is a two-click job.
Purpose#
People leave, contracts end, and invites go to the wrong address. Removal is the control for all three. It exists as a single, blunt action on purpose: there is no suspend, no partial access and no read-only downgrade, so there is never any doubt about whether a former teammate can still see your workspace.
Removal is also how you manage capacity. Because a pending invite holds a seat for as long as it exists, clearing stale invites is usually the fastest way to make room for someone new. See Seats and plan limits.
Requirements#
- You are signed in to the account that owns the workspace.
- The person appears in Your Team on your Team screen, with either a
PENDINGor anACTIVEbadge.
Permissions#
You can only remove people from your own workspace. Members cannot remove other members, and they cannot remove themselves — a member who wants to leave should ask the workspace owner to remove them.
If you have lost access to the owning account and need a member removed urgently, Metric Vault support can remove a seat on your behalf after verifying that you own the account. See Contacting support.
Navigation Path#
Dashboard → Account & Team → Team
Step-by-Step Guide#
- Open Team from the Account & Team group in the sidebar.
- Find the person in the Your Team list. If the list looks out of date, click Refresh.
- Click Remove on their row.
- A confirmation appears:
Remove this teammate from your workspace?Click Remove to proceed, or dismiss it to cancel. Nothing has happened yet at this point. - The row disappears and the seat is free. Their access ends with the same click — there is no grace period.
Cancelling a pending invite#
A pending invite is removed exactly the same way: find the row carrying the PENDING badge and click Remove. This is the only way to invalidate an invite link, and it is worth doing whenever a link may have gone astray, because invite links do not expire on their own.
What happens to the member#
| Immediately after removal | Effect |
|---|---|
| Their Blog Studio access | Ends. Their next action in Blog Studio lands on their own blog instead of yours, because they are no longer a member. |
| Your workspace in their dashboard | Disappears from their Workspaces You've Joined list. They are not signed out and see no error. |
| Their own account | Untouched. They keep their sign-in, their plan and their credits. |
| Their saved results and activity history | Untouched. These belong to their account and were never visible to you. See What teammates share. |
| Posts they wrote in your Blog Studio | Stay in your blog. Removing the person does not delete their content. |
| Your own data | Unchanged. Nothing you have set up is deleted by removing a person. |
| Your seat count | Frees a seat immediately, so you can invite a replacement straight away. |
Notifications#
Removal is silent. The person receives no email and sees no message in the product; the workspace simply stops appearing in their list. If the removal is part of an offboarding they should know about, tell them yourself.
Examples#
Example: A freelancer's contract ends on Friday. On Friday evening the owner opens Team, clicks Remove on the freelancer's row and confirms. The articles the freelancer wrote stay in Blog Studio under the agency's blog, the freelancer keeps their own Metric Vault account and their own saved work, and the seat is immediately available for the replacement contractor.

Tips#
- Remove pending invites you no longer expect anyone to accept. They hold seats and their links stay valid indefinitely.
- If you only want to stop someone publishing, change their role to
Author — own posts onlyinstead of removing them. See Roles and what each can do. - Removing and re-inviting the same address is the supported way to issue a fresh invite link, because there is no resend.
Best Practices#
- Treat removal as part of your offboarding checklist alongside your other tools, and do it the same day the person leaves.
- Before removing someone who publishes, check whether anything of theirs is mid-review in Blog Studio. Their posts remain, but they will no longer be able to finish them.
- Keep the member list short and review it periodically. It is the list of people who can publish to your blog, so it is a genuine access boundary.
Common Mistakes#
- Assuming removal deletes their work. It does not. Posts they wrote in your blog stay in your blog; results they ran stay on their own account.
- Assuming a pending invite is harmless. It holds a seat and its link still works. Remove it.
- Expecting the person to be told. They are not notified.
- Removing yourself. You cannot. You are the owner of your own workspace, not a member of it. To close your account entirely, see Deleting your account.
Limitations#
- No bulk removal — one row at a time.
- No undo. Re-inviting the person creates a fresh invite that they must accept again, with a new link.
- No suspend or temporary hold; removal is the only lever.
- No record of removals. The Team screen's Recent Activity panel shows invitations and joins only, and a removed member's events disappear with them.
Troubleshooting#
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The row is still there after clicking Remove. | The list has not re-read. | Click Refresh on Your Team, or reopen the Team screen. |
| The person says they can still see your workspace. | Their browser tab was open before the removal. | Ask them to reload. The next request they make will resolve to their own workspace. |
| You cannot find the person in Your Team. | You are looking at the wrong workspace, or they were invited from a different account. | The Team screen always shows your own workspace, regardless of which workspace you have switched into. Sign in with the account that sent the invite. |
| You removed the wrong person. | — | Invite them again. The seat is free and the invite takes seconds; they will need to accept the new link. |
| Remove does nothing and no confirmation appears. | The page did not finish loading. | Reload the dashboard and try again. |
FAQs#
Does removing a member refund credits? There are no credits to refund. Members never spend your credits; each person's runs are metered against their own account. See What teammates share.
Can a member leave a workspace themselves? Not from the product. Ask the workspace owner to remove you.
If I remove someone and re-invite them, do they keep their old role? No. The new invite carries whichever role you choose when you send it, and the old membership is gone.
Does removing a member affect my subscription? No. Seats are an allowance, not a per-seat charge, so removing someone does not change what you pay. See Team and workspace billing.
Can support remove a member for me? Yes, once they have verified you own the account. This is the fallback when you cannot reach the dashboard. See Contacting support.
