Managing billing in the customer portal
The Manage Billing button opens the Stripe portal, where you can update your payment method and details, download invoices and cancel.

Summary#
Everything to do with your payment details, invoices and cancellation happens in the Stripe billing portal. You open it with the Manage Billing button on the Account page. The portal is Stripe's own secure page, which is why Metric Vault never holds your card details, and it returns you to the Account page when you are done.
Purpose#
Card numbers, billing addresses and tax identifiers are exactly the kind of data you do not want a SaaS vendor storing in its own database. Delegating them to Stripe's portal removes that risk entirely and gives you the same self-serve control you would get from Stripe directly: change the card, correct the address, pull an invoice, or stop the subscription, without asking anyone.
Requirements#
- A Stripe customer record, which is created when you complete checkout. If you have never subscribed, there is nothing to manage.
- Sign-in with the email address the subscription is billed to. The portal session is looked up by that address.
Permissions#
Anyone signed in can press the button, but it only opens for an account that has a billing record. In a team workspace that is the owner, so invited members will see the "no paid subscription" message. See Team and workspace billing.
Navigation Path#
Dashboard → your avatar, top right → Account → Subscription → Manage Billing
Step-by-Step Guide#
- Open
Accountfrom the user menu in the top right of the dashboard. - On the Subscription card, click Manage Billing. The button reads Opening… while the session is created.
- The Stripe portal opens, headed Metric Vault — manage your subscription.
- Make your change. The available actions are listed below.
- When you are finished, use the portal's return link. You land back on the Account page.
Opening the portal is recorded in your own activity history as "Opened the billing portal".
What you can do in the portal#
| Action | Available | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Update your payment method | Yes | Adds or replaces the card used for renewals |
| View and download invoice history | Yes | Every invoice Stripe has raised for your subscription. See Invoices and receipts |
| Update your billing email | Yes | This is the address Stripe sends receipts to |
| Update your billing address | Yes | Used on invoices |
| Add or change a tax ID | Yes | Stored on your invoices. It does not change what you are charged. See Tax, VAT and currency |
| Cancel the subscription | Yes | Scheduled for the end of the current period. See Cancelling your subscription |
| Change plan | No | Plan changes are a new checkout. See Upgrading and downgrading |
| Pause the subscription | No | Not offered |
| Remove a payment method entirely | No | You can replace it, not delete it |
| Apply a promotion code | No | Codes cannot be redeemed in the portal or at checkout |
Important: changing your billing email in the portal changes where Stripe sends receipts. It does not change the email you sign in to Metric Vault with, and your plan is matched to your account by the sign-in address. If you need both changed, update your Metric Vault address as well and contact us so the subscription stays attached to the right account. See Changing your email address.
Which account the portal opens#
The portal is looked up by the email address on your Metric Vault account. If that address has more than one billing record with Stripe, the one with a live subscription is used. If none of them has a live subscription, the first record found is used, which is why an old record can appear for someone who has subscribed and cancelled in the past.
If you subscribed with a different address from the one you sign in with, the lookup will not find your subscription. Contact us with both addresses and we will reconnect them. See Contacting support.

Tips#
- Update the card before it expires rather than after a charge fails. There is no automated reminder from Metric Vault. See Failed payments.
- Add your company name, address and tax ID before your first renewal so every invoice carries them. Invoices already issued are not rewritten.
- Download invoices as you go if your finance team needs them. They are always available in the portal, but exporting at the time saves a round trip later.
Limitations#
- The portal cannot change plans. That is deliberate: plan changes go through checkout so the price and terms are shown before you commit.
- Cancellation is at period end only.
- No coupons, promotion codes or pausing.
- The portal does not exist for an account that has never subscribed.
Troubleshooting#
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
You are not on a paid subscription yet, so there is no billing to manage. | No Stripe customer for this address, so there is nothing to open | If you are on Free, use Upgrade instead. If you have paid, check which address you paid with |
Billing is not switched on for this environment yet. Please contact support@metricvaultai.com. | Billing is not configured on the environment you are using | Contact support at that address |
The billing portal is not set up on our Stripe account yet. We have been notified — please contact support@metricvaultai.com if this persists. | The portal configuration could not be created automatically | Try again in a few minutes, then contact support if it repeats |
Billing portal is unavailable right now. | The request to Stripe did not succeed | Try again shortly |
Billing portal unavailable. | The request did not reach us at all, usually a network or connectivity problem | Check your connection and try again |
| The button stays on Opening… | The request is still in flight, or the page lost focus mid-request | Wait a moment, then reload the Account page and try again |
| The portal opens on an old cancelled subscription | The address has more than one billing record and none is live | Contact us with the address you paid with so the records can be reconciled |
FAQs#
Does Metric Vault store my card? No. Card details are held by Stripe and entered only on Stripe's own pages.
Where are my invoices? In the portal, under invoice history. See Invoices and receipts.
Can I change my plan here? No. Use the Upgrade button on the Account page or the pricing page. See Upgrading and downgrading.
Can I add a VAT or tax number? Yes, in the portal. It is recorded on your invoices. It does not change the amount charged. See Tax, VAT and currency.
I am on Free and the button does nothing useful. Is it broken? No. There is no billing record to manage until you subscribe. The message points you at the Upgrade button and focuses it for you.
A customer changed their sign-in email. What do I check? Whether the Stripe customer still carries the old address. The portal lookup and the plan grant both work from the address on the account, so the two need to match or be reconnected by support.
