Dashboard tour
The app shell named part by part: the icon rail with its thirteen sections, the tool panel, the top bar, and the main area.
Last updated 2026-09-10
Summary#
The Metric Vault dashboard is one screen divided into four regions: a narrow icon rail of thirteen sections down the far left, a panel listing that section's tools beside it, a top bar of global controls, and the main area where everything else happens. Learn those four and you can find any of the ninety-two entries in the product. This page names every part exactly as it is labelled on screen.
Purpose#
The layout exists to keep a large toolset addressable. Around seventy tools cannot live in a flat list, and burying them three menus deep makes them unfindable. The two-column navigation is the compromise: the rail holds the thirteen subject areas, so you are always one click from any of them, and the panel holds only that subject's tools, so you are never scrolling past ones you do not want.
Everything else stays out of the way. The main area is the only region that scrolls, so a long report never pushes the navigation off screen.
Overview#
| Region | Where | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| Icon rail | Far left, narrow | The thirteen sections, plus the logo and the collapse button |
| Tool panel | Beside the rail | The current section's tools, the language switcher, your account block |
| Top bar | Across the top | Back, favorites, notifications, search, credits, country, theme, your menu |
| Main area | Everything else | The tool you have open, its results, and its explainer |
How it works#
The icon rail: all thirteen sections#
Each icon is one section. Hovering shows a tooltip; clicking opens the section and immediately opens its first tool, so you land on something you can use rather than another list.
| # | Rail label | Tooltip | Panel heading | Tools |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Home | Home | Home | 11 |
| 2 | Site Health | Site Health | Site Health | 12 |
| 3 | Keyword & Content Research | Keyword & Content Research | Keyword & Content Research | 8 |
| 4 | Write & Optimize | Write & Optimize | Write & Optimize | 5 |
| 5 | Blog | Blog | Blog | 1 |
| 6 | Competitors & Backlinks | Competitors & Backlinks | Competitors & Backlinks | 17 |
| 7 | AI Visibility | AI Visibility | AI Visibility | 9 |
| 8 | Image Tools | Image Tools | Image Tools | 3 |
| 9 | Library | Library | Library | 1 |
| 10 | Marketing | Marketing | Marketing | 10 |
| 11 | Track & Report | Track & Report | Track & Report | 8 |
| 12 | Help | Help | Help | 5 |
| 13 | Account & Team | Account & Team | Account & Team | 5 |
Note: the order above is the rail top to bottom. The SEO groups lead; Marketing - social, brand monitoring, PR and influencer work - sits below them, and the four paid-search tools live in Competitors & Backlinks. See docs/DECISIONS.md for why.
A gap separates the first ten from the last three. Track & Report, Help and Account & Team are utility sections: you visit them to configure something or read a report, not to run a measurement.
What each section is for:
- Home. Your command center, plus six workflows that fire several tools at once, plus Analyst AI, Auto-Execute, Growth Actions and Bulk Analysis.
- Site Health. Technical auditing. Most of these cost nothing.
- Keyword & Content. Keyword discovery, difficulty, gaps, topics, decay and internal linking.
- Competitors & Backlinks. Research on any domain, backlink profiles, head-to-head comparison, monitoring and link prospecting.
- AI Visibility. How AI assistants and Google AI Overviews describe you.
- Write & Optimize. Four entry points in the order the work happens: Brief, Write, Optimize and Publish. The rest of the group is reached from inside the step it belongs to, so the plagiarism, fact, GEO and translation checks live in Optimize rather than beside it.
- Promote. Social, PR, brand monitoring, PPC and advertising research.
- Image Tools. Resize and reformat images, entirely in your browser.
- Blog. Blog Studio, a complete publishing environment.
- Library. Everything you have generated, reopenable for free.
- Track & Report. Position tracking, alerts, scheduled reports, report history, white-label branding.
- Help. Search the knowledge base without leaving the app, jump to the article for the tool you were just in, and open the full Help Center at /help.
- Account & Team. Profile, plan, integrations and teammates.
Above the icons sit the Metric Vault logo and a collapse control labelled Toggle menu, with the tooltip "Collapse / expand menu". Collapsing hides the tool panel and widens the main area, which is useful when you are reading a wide report. The tooltip then reads "Expand menu". The Blog section collapses the panel automatically, because Blog Studio brings its own navigation.
Hovering a rail icon opens a small flyout listing that section's tools, so you can jump straight to one without leaving the tool you are in. It does not appear for the section you are already in, and it closes on Escape, on any scroll, or on a click elsewhere.
The tool panel#
Under the METRIC VAULT wordmark, a heading names the current section and the list beneath it is that section's tools. The tool you are in is highlighted.
Some entries carry a small badge. They describe the tool's status, not its price:
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| WORKFLOW | Runs several tools together and returns one report |
| LIVE | Backed by live data at the moment you run it |
| NEW | Recently added |
| BETA | Available, still being refined |
| DEPRECATED | Being retired; avoid building on it |
Badges and status indicators lists every badge in the product.
At the bottom of the panel are three things you will use often: the language switcher, showing your current language with its flag; your account block with your initials, your email address and a chip showing your plan; and a Log Out button.
The top bar#
Left to right:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Back | Returns to the previous tool. Always visible; greyed out when there is nowhere to go back to |
| Star icon | Opens Favorites & Recent: domains you check repeatedly, and your recent analyses |
| Bell icon | Opens Notifications, with a Mark all read button |
| Search box | Reads "Search tools, domains, and actions…" and shows a Ctrl K hint. Clicking it opens the command palette |
| Credits pill | Your usage, as <used> / <quota> reports, plus your plan. Unlimited accounts read "Unlimited reports" |
| Country picker | The market analyses target. Defaults to United States; forty-seven countries are available, and you can type to filter the list. Changing it asks you to confirm first |
| Range | Appears only on tools that show a trend over time. The options are 6M, 12M, 24M, 5Y and Custom, defaulting to 6M. It changes how much history the charts draw and nothing else: the KPI numbers above them are always the latest measured month |
| Theme toggle | Switches light and dark. The label shows the theme you would switch to |
| Your name and avatar | Opens the user menu |
The user menu contains My Reports, Scheduled Reports, White-Label Reports, Report History, Account, and Log out.
Note: the Range control is deliberately hidden on tools where a date range means nothing. If you cannot see it, the tool you are on does not use one.
Below the top bar, a breadcrumb trail shows where you are, in the form Dashboard › Section › Tool. Each ancestor is clickable. Finding your way around covers routing in full.
The main area#
This is the only region that scrolls. Whatever tool you open, the main area follows the same vertical order:
- An export row. Export PDF, Export Excel, Export CSV, Export JSON, and Share public link. These stay disabled until a result exists.
- The tool header. Status pills, the title, and a one-line description.
- Four statistic tiles. How many tools fire, typical run time, data sources, and the credit cost.
- The run row. An input, the run button with its price in the label, and often a Try sample button that shows a real example at no cost.
- The results area. Empty until you run something.
- The explainer. A long illustrated article teaching the concept the tool measures, with a worked example and an FAQ. See In-app tool explainers.
The home screen#
Opening the dashboard, or clicking Get Started → Dashboard, gives you the command center. It contains a live status strip, then an Intelligence Overview built from your own analysis history: four cards in a two-by-two grid — a Run Analysis card that runs the website you have connected, the 8-Second Quick Preview for a fast three-metric snapshot of any domain you type, an Opportunities card and a Daily Briefing — followed by four headline numbers, three charts, your top domains and recent activity.
Everything there is drawn from work you have done, so a new account correctly shows zeros and a "Welcome to Metric Vault" block. Dashboard covers the screen in detail.
On a small screen#
The layout adapts, and one change is worth knowing about before you are caught by it.
| Width | What changes |
|---|---|
| Below about 1150px | The icon rail narrows and multi-column grids stack |
| Below about 900px | The top bar wraps onto a second line |
| Below about 820px | The tool panel is hidden completely |
On a phone, navigation is the icon rail plus the command palette. The hover flyout is a pointer interaction and will not open on a touch screen, so tapping a rail icon opens that section's first tool directly. To reach a specific tool on a phone, the command palette is the reliable route: see The command palette (Ctrl+K).
