Notification preferences
Four switches on the Account screen control which alerts reach your notifications feed and which emails Metric Vault sends you.
Last updated 2026-08-06
Summary#
Account → Preferences carries four notification switches: Email Notifications, Weekly Digest, Competitor Alerts and SEO Score Alerts. All four start switched on. They are saved to your account the moment you click them, so there is no Save button, and they follow you to any browser you sign in from. This article explains exactly what each one turns off, and what it does not.
Purpose#
Metric Vault watches things on your behalf: competitor pages, keyword positions, scheduled reports, AI visibility. That is only useful if the resulting noise is tuned to you. Somebody running twenty client sites wants every competitor change in the bell panel; somebody who checks in weekly wants a quiet interface and one email when something actually moves. These four switches are how you set that line.
Requirements#
- A signed-in session.
- No plan requirement. Every plan has all four preferences.
- The alerts themselves have their own requirements. A competitor change can only reach you if you are monitoring a URL, and a rank drop only if you are tracking a keyword.
Permissions#
Each person controls their own preferences. Your settings do not change what a teammate receives, and a workspace owner cannot mute a member's notifications. Both the preferences and the notifications feed are tied to your own account, so switching into a workspace you were invited to does not swap them.
Navigation Path#
Dashboard → Account & Team → Account → Preferences
Step-by-Step Guide#
- Open the Account screen and scroll to the Preferences card.
- The card opens by loading your saved settings, so give it a moment before reading the switch positions.
- Click a switch to change it. The change is saved immediately; there is no Save button and no confirmation message.
- To confirm a change stuck, navigate away and back, or reload the page. The card re-reads your saved settings every time it opens.
What each preference controls#
Email Notifications#
Receive alerts and weekly reports via email. Default: on.
Turning it off stops the emails Metric Vault sends you about your own account:
- The scheduled report ready email, sent when a schedule you set up runs and has a recipient address configured.
- The AI Visibility drop email, sent when a tracked brand's visibility falls past the threshold on one of your alerts. This one also requires SEO Score Alerts to be on.
It does not affect emails that carry their own recipient address configured on the item itself, such as Competitor Monitor alerts. See the table below.
Weekly Digest#
Summary of your weekly analytics performance. Default: on.
The preference is stored on your account. Metric Vault does not send a separate weekly digest email today, so switching it off changes nothing you will notice. Leave it as you prefer.
Competitor Alerts#
Get notified when tracked competitors change. Default: on.
Controls whether competitor change items appear in your notifications feed — the bell panel in the top bar and the Notifications & Alerts Hub. Switch it off and those items are filtered out of both.
It does not stop the Slack message, webhook call or email that Competitor Monitor sends, because those are configured per monitored URL. To stop those, clear the channel fields on the monitored URL itself. See Competitor monitor.
SEO Score Alerts#
Notify when your score changes significantly. Default: on.
Two effects:
- Rank drop items are filtered out of your notifications feed when it is off.
- The AI Visibility drop email is only sent when this is on and Email Notifications is on.
Like competitor alerts, it does not stop the Slack, webhook or email alert configured on an individual rank alert. See Rank alerts.
Quick reference#
| Preference | Default | Turns off | Does not affect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email Notifications | On | Scheduled report emails to you; AI Visibility drop emails | Competitor Monitor and rank alert channels configured per item; team invitation emails |
| Weekly Digest | On | Nothing today; the setting is stored only | Everything else |
| Competitor Alerts | On | Competitor change items in the bell panel and the Alerts Hub | Competitor Monitor Slack, webhook and email alerts |
| SEO Score Alerts | On | Rank drop items in the feed; AI Visibility drop emails | Rank alert Slack, webhook and email alerts |

Examples#
Example: An agency lead monitors thirty competitor pages and finds the bell badge constantly lit. They switch Competitor Alerts off, so the bell stays quiet, but they leave the Slack webhook on each monitored URL, so their team channel still receives every change. Nothing is lost; the noise has moved to where the team already looks.
Example: A consultant is going on leave for two weeks. They switch Email Notifications off so scheduled report emails stop landing in an unread inbox. The schedules keep running and every report is waiting in the Library when they return.

Tips#
- Turn a preference off rather than deleting the underlying alert. The alert keeps collecting history and you can turn the notification back on later.
- If you want a competitor change to reach Slack but not the bell panel, switch Competitor Alerts off and configure the Slack webhook on the monitored URL.
- Mark all read in the bell panel clears the unread dots and the badge. It is a housekeeping action, not a preference.
- Preferences are saved to your account, so a new laptop already has them right. Theme and language do not work this way — those are per browser. See All account settings.
Common Mistakes#
- Expecting Email Notifications to silence every email. It governs the emails Metric Vault sends to you about your account. Alerts addressed to a recipient you configured on a monitored URL or a rank alert have their own setting, on the item.
- Expecting Competitor Alerts to stop Slack messages. It filters your in-app feed only.
- Reading the switches before the card has loaded. The card re-reads your saved settings each time it opens; wait a moment before judging.
- Looking for a Save button. There is not one. Clicking the switch is the save.
Limitations#
- Four preferences, no finer control. You cannot mute one specific monitored URL from this screen; do that on the URL itself.
- There is no quiet-hours or digest-frequency setting.
- Weekly Digest is stored but no weekly digest email is sent today.
- Preferences apply to your account, not to a workspace or a team.
Troubleshooting#
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A switch appears to reset when you reopen the card | You read it before the saved settings loaded | Wait a second, or reload the page |
| Emails still arrive after switching Email Notifications off | They are alerts addressed to a recipient configured on a monitored URL or rank alert | Clear that recipient field on the item itself |
| The bell panel is still full after switching Competitor Alerts off | The page was loaded before the change | Reload, then reopen the bell |
| No notifications at all | Nothing has happened yet, or nothing is being monitored | Confirm you have monitored URLs or tracked keywords. See Notifications and alerts hub |
| An expected report email never arrived | Email Notifications is off, or the schedule has no recipient address | Check both. See My scheduled report never arrived |
| A teammate gets alerts you do not | Preferences are per person | Each person sets their own |
FAQs#
Where do I see notifications in the app? Two places, both fed by the same data: the bell icon in the top bar, and Track & Report → Notifications & Alerts Hub for the full-page view. See Notifications and alerts hub.
Do these preferences change what my team receives? No. They are yours alone.
Do notifications cost credits? No. Receiving alerts is free. The tool runs that generate them, such as a rank check, follow their own costs.
What does Mark all read actually clear? It clears the unread dots and the bell badge for everything currently in the panel, and it records competitor change items as read on your account so they stay read on your next visit.
Can I get a daily digest instead of individual alerts? Not today. The available controls are the four switches described here.
Are the preferences kept if I sign out? Yes. They are stored on your account and load wherever you sign in.
