Exporting your data

Summary#

Metric Vault exports at the level of a result, not the account. Every tool result carries its own export row with Export PDF, Export Excel, Export CSV, Export JSON and Share public link, and saved results in the Library can be downloaded again at any time. The Export My Data button in the Danger Zone is a small summary of the Account screen itself, not an archive of your work.

Purpose#

Two different needs get confused here. One is "give me this analysis in a format I can hand to a client" — that is the export row on the result, and it is the one people use daily. The other is "give me everything before I leave" — there is no single archive button for that, so this article maps the routes that exist so you can collect what matters before you need it.

Requirements#

• A finished result. Export buttons stay disabled, with the tooltip Run the analysis first, until a run completes, and disable again the moment a new run starts.
• A browser that allows downloads from metricvaultai.com.
• No plan requirement for exporting. Removing Metric Vault branding from exported PDFs and share pages is a separate white-label capability. See White-label reports.

Permissions#

You can export any result you can see. If you have switched into a workspace you were invited to, you can export that workspace's results. Public share links are readable by anyone who has the URL, with no sign-in, so treat creating one as publishing.

Navigation Path#

From a tool result:

Dashboard → any tool → export row above the result

From saved work:

Dashboard → Library → Saved Work

That opens the Library screen, which has two tabs: Saved work, which is selected by default, and Activity.

The account summary:

Dashboard → Account & Team → Account → Danger Zone → Export My Data

Step-by-Step Guide#

Export a tool result#

1. Run the tool and wait for the result to finish rendering.
2. Use the export row at the top of the result card. Five buttons:

1. The file downloads with a name built from the tool and the target, so exports from different runs do not overwrite each other.

If you click before a result exists you see Run the tool first — there is no result to export yet.

Download a saved result again#

1. Open Library → Saved Work.
2. Find the result. You can search by target, filter by tool, and sort by Newest first, Oldest first or Highest cost.
3. Click Open. The saved result opens exactly as it was, with the badge No credits used.
4. Use Download JSON for the data. Image tool runs also offer Download image or Download preview.

Reopening a saved result never costs credits. Only Run fresh does. See Saved Work.

Export the account summary#

1. Open Account and scroll to the Danger Zone.
2. The first row is Export My Data with the helper text Download all your analysis data as a CSV file.
3. Click Export. A file named metricvault-account-export.json downloads and the button briefly reads Exported.

Tips#

• Set the theme to light before exporting a PDF. Exports capture what is on screen, and a dark-background PDF rarely suits a client document. See Light and dark mode.
• Set your interface language before running, if the export is for a non-English-speaking client. See Changing the language.
• Use CSV or Excel when someone will do arithmetic on the numbers, PDF when someone will read it, JSON when a system will consume it.
• Exporting costs no credits, and re-exporting a saved result costs no credits.
• Export before you cancel or delete. See Deleting your account.

Common Mistakes#

• Expecting Export My Data to be a full archive. It is a summary of the Account screen. Your work is exported from the results and the Library.
• Clicking export while the result is still loading. The buttons are disabled during a run, with the tooltip Run the analysis first.
• Trying CSV or Excel on a result with no tables. Those formats read the tables in the result. A result that is prose and charts has none.
• Sharing a public link for confidential work. Anyone with the URL can read it. Export a file instead.
• Assuming Report History's Export All downloads a file. It opens the print dialog.

Limitations#

• There is no one-click archive of an entire account.
• CSV and Excel exports contain the tables in the result; charts and narrative sections do not survive those two formats. Use PDF for the full layout.
• JSON export needs the data from the current run. If a page has been reloaded since the run, re-run or reopen the saved result first.
• PDF, Excel and CSV rely on components that load with the page, so an export clicked in the first moments after a page load may report that the engine is still loading.

FAQs#

Does exporting cost credits? No. Exporting and re-exporting are free, and reopening a saved result to export it again is free.

Can I export everything at once? No. Exports are per result. Work through Library → Saved Work if you need a broad collection.

Do exports carry my branding? They carry Metric Vault branding unless you have configured white-label branding, which applies your logo and colors to exported PDFs and public share pages. See White-label reports.

Is an exported PDF the same as a share link? No. A PDF is a file you control. A share link is a public URL that anyone can open. Choose deliberately.

How long are exported files kept? They are not kept. The file is generated in your browser and saved to your machine.
