Changing your password

Set or change a password from inside the app, or reset one you have forgotten using the email link on the sign-in page.

Last updated 2026-08-06

Summary#

There are two ways to set a password on a Metric Vault account. If you are signed in, use Set Password on the Account screen. If you cannot sign in, use Forgot password? on the sign-in page and Metric Vault emails you a link that opens a Set New Password form. Both routes end with a password you can use with your email address.

Purpose#

Metric Vault supports two ways of signing in: an email address with a password, and Google. Accounts created with Google have no password until someone sets one, which means they can only ever be reached through Google. Setting a password gives you a second, independent way in. And if you have forgotten a password you already had, the email reset flow gets you back in without contacting anyone.

Requirements#

  • To change a password from inside the app: an active session. You must be signed in already.
  • To reset a forgotten password: access to the inbox for the email address on the account. The reset link is the only proof of identity in that flow.
  • A password of at least 6 characters for the in-app form, or at least 8 characters for the email reset form.

Permissions#

Every plan can set and reset a password. There is no team role involved: only the account holder can change their own password, and no administrator can set a password on a customer's behalf. Support cannot read or change your password.

In the app:

Dashboard → Account & Team → Account → Security → Set Password

From the sign-in page:

Sign in page → Forgot password?

Step-by-Step Guide#

Set or change a password while signed in#

  1. Open Account and find the Security card.
  2. The first row reads Set Password, with the helper text You signed in with Google. Set a password to also sign in with email.
  3. Click Set Password. A dialog titled Set password asks Enter a new password (minimum 6 characters):. The text you type is masked.
  4. Type the new password and click Save. The button briefly reads Saving….
  5. On success you see Password updated. You can now sign in with email + password.

If the password is shorter than six characters, Metric Vault shows Password must be at least 6 characters. and nothing changes. If the change cannot be completed you see Could not set password: followed by the reason. If your session has ended you see You are not signed in. — sign in again first.

Tip

Tip: After setting a password, the Security tile at the top of the Account screen changes from Google only to Secure. That is your confirmation that the account now has both sign-in methods.

Reset a password you have forgotten#

  1. Go to the sign-in page.
  2. Type your address into Email Address. This step matters: the reset link is sent to whatever is in that box.
  3. Click Forgot password? under the password field.
  4. You see Password reset email sent. Check that inbox, including the spam folder.
  5. Open the link in the email. It brings you back to Metric Vault on a card headed Set New Password, with the line Enter your new password below.
  6. Fill in New Password (placeholder Min 8 characters) and Confirm Password (placeholder Re-enter password).
  7. Click Save New Password. The button reads Saving... while it works.
  8. On success you see Password updated successfully! Redirecting... and you are taken to your dashboard about two seconds later, already signed in.

If you leave the email box empty before clicking the link, you see Please enter your email address. If the message cannot be sent you see Error sending reset email.

On the Set New Password card:

  • A password under eight characters shows Password must be at least 8 characters.
  • Two boxes that do not match show Passwords do not match.
  • A failure shows Error: followed by the reason, and the button becomes clickable again.

Examples#

Example

Example: Priya signed up with Google six months ago and now wants to use a password manager. She opens Account → Security, clicks Set Password, pastes a 24-character generated password and clicks Save. She sees Password updated. You can now sign in with email + password. and the Security tile now reads Secure. Google still works; she has simply added a second way in.

Example

Example: Marco cannot remember his password. On the sign-in page he types marco@example.com, clicks Forgot password?, sees Password reset email sent, and opens the link from his inbox. He enters a new twelve-character password twice, clicks Save New Password, and lands on the dashboard.

Tips#

  • Use at least eight characters everywhere. The in-app form accepts six, but the email reset form requires eight, so an eight-character minimum works in both places.
  • Setting a password does not remove Google sign-in. You keep both.
  • If you want every other browser and device signed out as well, follow the password change with Log Out All on the same Security card. See Sessions and signing out.
  • The reset link goes to the address typed in the Email Address box, not to "the account". Typing the wrong address sends nothing useful anywhere.

Common Mistakes#

  • Clicking Forgot password? with an empty email box. Nothing is sent, and you see Please enter your email address.
  • Assuming a failed sign-in means a wrong password. The sign-in page shows the same message, Invalid email or password, for every sign-in failure. See I cannot sign in before assuming your password is wrong.
  • Waiting for a reset email that went to spam. Check the spam folder before requesting another.

FAQs#

How long is the reset link valid? Open it as soon as it arrives. If the link no longer works, request a new one from Forgot password? — there is no limit on how many times you can ask.

Does changing my password sign me out of other devices? Do not rely on it. If you want to be certain every other session has ended, use Log Out All on the Account screen immediately afterwards. That signs the account out everywhere, including here, and you sign back in once.

Can support reset my password for me? No. Support has no way to read or set your password. The email reset flow is the route, and it deliberately requires access to your inbox.

I signed up with Google. Do I need a password at all? No. Google sign-in works on its own. A password is useful as a backup and if you prefer a password manager.

Are there rules about which characters I can use? The only rule Metric Vault enforces is length. Longer is better than more exotic characters; a passphrase or a generated password is fine.

Is there two-factor authentication? Not today. The Security tile reports this honestly with 2FA off. See Account security for what does protect the account.
