Advertising Intelligence Report

Profiles a domain's paid advertising — paid keyword count, estimated spend, CPC, the live ad copy running, the messaging themes inside it, and the competitors bidding alongside.

Last updated 2026-08-06

Summary#

Advertising Intelligence profiles what a domain is advertising and how it says it. Enter a domain and you get its paid keyword count, estimated monthly ad spend, average CPC, the ad creative running against its brand term, a breakdown of the messaging themes in that creative, its paid competitors, and twelve months of spend and CPC history.

Purpose#

Knowing a competitor spends money is not useful. Knowing what they say, which angles they lead with, whether their spend just stepped up, and who else is in the auction — that changes what you write and what you bid on. This tool exists to turn a competitor's advertising into a readable strategy.

Overview#

Enter a domain. Metric Vault pulls the domain's paid metrics, its historical spend and CPC series, its paid-competitor set, and the advertising creative associated with it. The report is assembled from that measurement.

This tool never falls through to a model when the data is thin. If the domain runs no paid search, or if the provider is unavailable, you get a report with zero figures and an explicit banner rather than an invented budget.

The tool is listed in the sidebar as Advertising Intelligence and titled Advertising Research on its own screen; the result header repeats Advertising Research. All three names refer to this one tool.

Benefits#

  • The actual ad text, not a summary of it — with a badge marking whether each ad was captured live or inferred from a bid term.
  • Ad Copy DNA classifies the messaging so you can see a competitor's angle at a glance instead of reading twenty ads.
  • A spend-change banner surfaces month-over-month moves of 10% or more without you hunting for them.
  • Twelve months of spend and CPC history, so a spike is distinguishable from a trend.
  • Zero-spend domains are reported honestly, which is itself a finding.

Use Cases#

  • Competitive messaging audit. You want to know which angles a rival leads with before writing your own ads.
  • New entrant detection. The competitor panel shows who else bids on your shared terms.
  • Spend-change investigation. A rival got louder and you need to know when it started and how large the change was.
  • Pre-launch research. Before running ads in a category, you check what the incumbents pay and say.
  • Client reporting. The KPI strip plus Ad Copy DNA is a complete competitor advertising slide.

Requirements#

  • A signed-in Metric Vault account.
  • A paid plan. Free covers the zero-credit technical tools only.
  • Three credits available in your monthly allowance. See How credits work.
  • A domain. The measurement is domain-level.

Cost#

3 credits per run, printed on the button as Research Ads · 3 reports.

At 3 credits this counts as a premium report and is deducted from your monthly allowance. When the allowance is spent you get the over-quota message instead of a result — see Quotas and rate limits.

A shared-cache hit still charges 3 credits; advertising data is held there for five days. Re-opening a saved run is free, and See example renders a stored sample at no cost. See Result caching and freshness.

Note that a domain running no ads still costs 3 credits. The report is real; it just reports zero.

Reading the Results#

The spend-change banner, when it appears, sits above everything: it fires when the most recent month's spend moved 10% or more against the previous month, naming the direction and the percentage. If spend did not move that much, the banner instead states the average CPC across the paid keyword count. Read it as a prompt, not a conclusion — the panels below tell you what changed.

The header shows the domain, an Advertising Research chip, a Verified · DataForSEO badge and a spender tier. The tier is set purely by estimated monthly spend: Heavy Spender at $50,000 and above, Active Bidder at $10,000 to $49,999, Light Paid at $1,000 to $9,999, and Organic-Focused below $1,000. That single label is often the whole answer when you are triaging a list of competitors.

The four KPI tiles.

  • Paid Keywords — how many terms the domain appears on in paid results, captioned Terms in paid results. A few dozen is a focused programme; several thousand is a broad-match strategy that will have waste in it.
  • Monthly Ad Spend — the estimated Google Ads budget. Provider estimate, not invoiced spend. Reliable for comparison, not as an absolute.
  • Avg CPC — cost per paid click across the programme, captioned Cost per paid click.
  • Active Competitors — how many domains bid on shared terms, captioned Bidding on shared terms.

Divide spend by CPC for a rough monthly click volume; if that number looks implausible for the category, treat the spend estimate with more caution.

When no paid activity is found, a banner reads No paid advertising detected. followed by the reason — either No paid advertising detected for this domain in Google Ads data. or Advertising data requires DataForSEO to be configured. The KPI tiles show zeros. This is a real result: it means the domain competes organically, which changes how you approach it.

What This Means turns the measurements into short tagged statements — a good tone for a favourable signal, an alert tone for a risk. Recommended Action Plan follows with a prioritized list.

Ad Copy DNA is the section that earns the credits. It scans every captured ad headline and description for eight messaging themes and reports which appear and how often: Free Trial, Pricing, CTA — Sign Up, CTA — Buy, Urgency, Trust Badge, Social Proof and Feature-Led. Only themes actually present are shown, ordered by frequency.

Read it as a strategy map. A competitor heavy on Pricing and Urgency is buying on discount and will be expensive to out-discount. One heavy on Trust Badge and Social Proof is defending a brand position, and a feature or price angle can cut across it. An absent theme is an opening.

Top Ad Copies lists the creative itself: headline, description and either the display URL with a last-seen date, or — where the ad was reconstructed from a bid term — the bid term and its CPC. Each carries a badge: LIVE for creative captured from a real results page, INFERRED for creative derived from the keyword the domain bids on. Treat LIVE ads as evidence and INFERRED ones as indicative. When no ads were captured at all the panel says so: No Google Ads were live for this brand at scan time — paid ad copies vary by auction, time and location.

Top Ad Competitors lists up to eight rival domains, each with its paid keyword count and the number of keywords shared with your target, and an action to analyze that competitor directly. The shared count matters more than the total: a domain with 20,000 paid keywords but only 30 in common is not really your competitor.

Ad Spend Trend and Avg CPC Trend each plot twelve months, side by side. Read them together where both are populated: rising spend with flat CPC means more keywords or more volume; flat spend with rising CPC means the auction got more expensive and their reach is shrinking — which is the moment to move in. Either panel states plainly when the history is missing, with No ad spend history available yet for this domain. or Insufficient historical CPC data to plot a trend. Smaller and newer domains often have neither.

The Get recommendations panel adds findings from its own rules: it flags a domain with no live ads found, and a domain running fewer than three creatives, which limits their ability to test. See Get Recommendations.

One thing to know. The tool's description mentions display ads and Shopping (PLA) campaigns. Those signals are collected but the rendered report focuses on search advertising — creative, spend, CPC and competitors. For Shopping specifically, run Shopping Ads (PLA).

Examples#

Example

Example: You run shopify.com. The banner reports spend rose +18% last month. The header tags it Heavy Spender. Paid Keywords reads 14,200, Monthly Ad Spend $310K, Avg CPC $3.90, Active Competitors 8. Ad Copy DNA shows Free Trial leading, then CTA — Sign Up, then Trust Badge; Pricing and Urgency are absent. Top Ad Copies shows six LIVE ads all leading with the free trial. Ad Spend Trend confirms the step-up is one month old, while Avg CPC Trend is flat. Your read: they are buying more volume at the same price, on a trial-led message, with no discount angle in market. You brief a price-anchored campaign to occupy the empty theme, and take the shared keywords into PPC Research to size the auction before bidding.

Tips#

  • Run your two closest competitors back to back and compare their Ad Copy DNA. The themes one of them has and the other lacks is your positioning gap.
  • Note which themes are missing from everyone in the category. That is usually the cheapest angle to own.
  • Screenshot the LIVE ads. Creative rotates, and the panel only shows what was running at scan time.
  • Check the spend banner before reading anything else. If it did not fire, nothing material changed this month.

Best Practices#

  • Use spend figures comparatively between domains, never as a stated budget.
  • Weight LIVE ads over INFERRED ones when drawing conclusions about messaging.
  • Re-run monthly. The shared cache holds for five days and creative strategy does not turn over weekly.
  • Pair with PPC Research for the auction economics behind the creative, and run both plus Shopping through the Advertising Intelligence workflow when you want the full picture in one action.

Common Mistakes#

  • Treating INFERRED ads as real creative. They are reconstructed from bid terms; the badge tells you which is which.
  • Assuming a zero report means the tool failed. A domain with no paid advertising is a valid, useful result — and still costs 3 credits.
  • Quoting Monthly Ad Spend as a budget. It is a modelled estimate.
  • Comparing total paid keyword counts between competitors. Shared keywords are the meaningful figure.
  • Expecting a display or Shopping breakdown. The rendered report covers search advertising; use Shopping Ads (PLA) for Shopping.

Limitations#

  • Measurement is the United States, English-language index, desktop.
  • Competitors are capped at eight rows in the report.
  • Ad creative is whatever was captured at scan time; rotation, geography and auction timing all affect what appears.
  • Spend, CPC and paid-traffic figures are provider estimates.
  • Display-ad and Shopping panels are not rendered, despite being mentioned in the tool description.
  • The tool never generates figures when data is missing — it returns zeros and an explanation instead.

FAQs#

How is this different from PPC Research? PPC Research profiles the auction — CPC, keyword cluster, competition and an opportunity score — for 1 credit. Advertising Intelligence profiles the advertiser's creative and messaging for 3. Most teams run PPC Research to size the market and this one to decide what to say.

Is the ad copy real? The ads badged LIVE were captured from a real results page. Those badged INFERRED were reconstructed from the keyword the domain bids on, and are indicative rather than verbatim.

Why did I get charged for a domain with no ads? The measurement ran and returned a real answer: no paid advertising. The charge covers the lookup, not the size of the result.

Does a cached result still cost 3 credits? Yes. Only re-opening your own saved result from Saved Work and See example are free.

Can I run it on the Free plan? No. It needs a paid plan, and at 3 credits it is metered against your monthly premium allowance.

Can I see display or YouTube ads? Not in this report. Shopping ads have their own tool, Shopping Ads (PLA).
