Keyword Vault

A free vault for the keywords you care about, saved to your account — organise them into named lists, tag, score and filter them, import in bulk, and send a whole list into rank tracking.

Last updated 2026-09-07

Summary#

Keyword Vault — titled Your Keyword Vault in the app — is where the keywords you decide to act on live. You add them by hand or save them from other keyword tools, tag them, and read the vault's aggregate intent and difficulty profile. It runs no report and costs no credits.

Purpose#

Keyword research produces far more candidates than any team can act on. The shortlist normally ends up in a spreadsheet nobody opens again, detached from the numbers that justified it.

The vault exists to keep the shortlist inside the workspace, with its volume, difficulty and intent attached, and one click away from the tool that acts on it. The decision it supports is sequencing: of the keywords you have already qualified, which one do you work on next.

Overview#

The vault is stored on your account, so the same lists appear when you sign in on another computer, in another browser, or after clearing your cache. Adding a keyword records the phrase plus optional volume, difficulty and intent. Tags let you group keywords into workstreams. Once three or more keywords are saved, the screen unlocks two charts summarizing the intent mix and difficulty spread of the whole vault.

Keywords live in named lists. A new account starts with one called Saved keywords; use New list to add more (for example one list per client or per content sprint) and the selector at the top of the screen to switch between them. Rename and Delete act on the list you are looking at, and the last remaining list cannot be deleted.

Your browser still keeps its own copy, and still writes it first. That is what lets the screen stay instant and keeps the tool usable with no connection: a keyword added offline is saved locally straight away and uploaded when the connection returns. The line at the top right of the list bar tells you which state you are in.

If you were using the vault before it moved onto the account, whatever was in this browser is carried up the first time you open the tool signed in, and you will see a note saying how many keywords were moved. The migration only adds — see Limitations for exactly what it does when the same keyword already exists on the account.

Every action on the screen either edits the list or navigates you somewhere with the keyword pre-filled. Nothing here calls a data provider, so nothing here charges.

Benefits#

  • Free. No credits, no plan gate, no quota.
  • Keeps the shortlist next to the tools that act on it.
  • Tags turn a flat list into workstreams — priority, quick wins, PPC and so on.
  • The two vault charts show the shape of your whole plan, not one keyword.
  • One-click export to CSV when the list needs to leave the app.

Use Cases#

Building a quarterly shortlist. Save the winners as you work through Keyword Explorer and Keyword Overview, then review the whole set at once.

Splitting work across a team. Tag keywords Priority, Quick Win and Content Gap, then filter to the tag whoever is working today owns.

Sanity-checking a plan's balance. The Intent Mix chart shows at a glance whether your entire quarter is informational content with nothing commercial.

Spotting your own quick wins. The vault flags keywords with a thousand or more searches at difficulty 40 or under.

Handing over. Export the vault as CSV with volume, difficulty, intent, CPC, tags and the date each was added.

Requirements#

  • A signed-in account to reach the dashboard.
  • Nothing else. There is no plan gate, no credit cost and no integration.
  • A browser that allows local storage. The account holds the vault; the browser keeps a working copy so the screen stays usable offline.

Permissions#

Every plan, including Free, has full use of Keyword Vault, and there is no role restriction. Lists are private to your own sign-in: they follow you to any device or browser, and they are not shared with teammates, even inside a team workspace. Use Export CSV to hand a list to somebody else.

Cost#

Free — 0 credits. No action on this screen calls a data provider.

Two buttons carry a credit label because of where they take you, not what they do here:

  • Send All to Content Engine · 1 report navigates to the Content Engine with your highest-volume keyword pre-filled. The credit is charged only if you then run Content Engine.
  • Bulk Analyze opens Keyword Overview with your first saved keyword loaded. That run costs 3 credits when you start it.

See How credits work for the model.

Step-by-Step Guide#

  1. Open Keyword & Content Research and choose Keyword Vault.
  2. Type a keyword into the ADD A KEYWORD field.
  3. Optionally fill Volume (optional), KD and the intent dropdown. Filling them is what makes the vault's charts and averages meaningful.
  4. Click Add Keyword. The row appears at the top of Your Saved Keywords.
  5. Click a tag on a row to apply or remove it.
  6. Use the tag pills under Filter by tag: to narrow the list.
  7. Use a row's analyze action to open Keyword Overview and run it for that keyword, or Export CSV to take the list out.

Reading the Results#

Keyword Vault shows the state of your vault rather than a report, but every number on it is a decision aid.

The header badges. A green badge reading VERIFIED · ON YOUR ACCOUNT once the list has synced, or VERIFIED · THIS BROWSER when it has not — you are signed out, or offline — and a status badge that reads EMPTY when the vault is empty and N KEYWORDS TRACKED once it is not.

The four stat tiles.

The unlock note. Below three keywords the screen shows Intent & Difficulty insights unlock when you save keywords, explaining that saving three or more from Keyword Explorer or Keyword Overview reveals the breakdown. That is a genuine threshold, not a plan gate.

Intent Mix. Once unlocked, a donut of the vault by intent. This is the most useful chart on the screen for planning. A vault that is entirely informational will build reach and no revenue; one that is entirely transactional will have nothing to rank on early.

Difficulty Distribution. Your saved keywords bucketed into 0-20 · Easy, 21-40 · Easy, 41-60 · Medium, 61-80 · Hard and 81-100 · Brutal. A healthy plan has weight in the easy bands, which is where the early wins come from, and a small number of hard bets. All-brutal is a plan that produces nothing for a year.

The findings panel. Beneath the list, a set of plain findings computed from the vault: the total and its combined monthly searches, the average difficulty and its tier, how many quick wins you hold (a thousand or more searches at difficulty 40 or under), your highest-volume keyword, how many keywords are still untagged, and how many are missing volume or difficulty data. The last two are the ones to act on — an untagged keyword has not been prioritized, and a keyword with no numbers cannot be compared.

Your Saved Keywords. One row per keyword with its metrics, its tags as toggle chips, and per-row actions to analyze or remove it. The heading carries the current count, which changes with the tag filter.

What to do with it. Every week: filter to Quick Win, take the top row into Keyword Overview, and remove anything you have decided against. A vault that only grows is not a plan.

Where these keywords go. Above the saved list, your whole vault grouped into the pages it implies, largest combined search volume first. Keywords that point at the same page are shown as one job. See Recommended placement — where a keyword goes on your site.

Examples#

Example

Example: You save 14 keywords across a fortnight. Avg Volume reads 2,340, Avg Difficulty reads 52 (Medium), and Total Tags reads 3. The Difficulty Distribution chart puts nine keywords in the 41–60 band and none below 20. The findings panel reports two quick wins and that six keywords are untagged. You tag the two quick wins Priority, run them through Keyword Overview, and go back to Keyword Explorer to find three genuinely easy terms so the quarter is not entirely mid-difficulty bets.

Tips#

  • Always fill volume and difficulty when you add a keyword by hand. Without them the tiles and both charts are blank.
  • Tag as you save, not later. Untagged keywords are the ones that never get worked on.
  • Export a CSV before clearing the vault or switching machine — the list does not travel by itself.
  • Use Long-tail and Quick Win as working tags rather than aspirational ones.

Best Practices#

  • Keep the vault small enough to read in one screen. It is a shortlist, not an archive.
  • Balance the difficulty distribution deliberately: some easy, some medium, one or two hard.
  • Review the intent mix at the start of each planning cycle.
  • Remove keywords once their page is published. The vault should reflect what is still to do.
  • For work that must be shared with teammates, keep the source of truth in a saved report or an export, not in the local vault.

Common Mistakes#

  • Expecting the vault to sync. It is stored in this browser on this device. Teammates do not see it.
  • Adding keywords with no numbers, which leaves the tiles and charts empty.
  • Clearing all and expecting an undo. Clear All asks for confirmation and is final.
  • Reading Send All to Content Engine · 1 report as free. The navigation is free; the Content Engine run it sets up is not.
  • Assuming Bulk Analyze runs everything. It opens Keyword Overview with the first keyword loaded, and reports how many are queued behind it.

Limitations#

  • A list holds up to 2,000 keywords and an account can have up to 50 lists. Bulk import takes up to 1,000 keywords per paste; split a larger file across several.
  • Lists are saved to your account and are not lost by clearing site data. They are private to your own sign-in, so there is still no team sharing.
  • Signed out, the vault falls back to this browser only. Anything saved that way is carried onto your account the first time you open the tool signed in.
  • That first-time migration only adds. If the same keyword is already on your account, the account's copy is kept and the browser's is discarded, because the account is the copy that has seen every device. It runs once per browser, so a keyword deleted on another machine is not resurrected by an old browser's copy.
  • Volume, difficulty, intent and CPC are stored as entered or as captured when saved from another tool; they are not refreshed automatically.
  • The two charts require at least three saved keywords.
  • Tags are fixed to the eight provided; you cannot create new ones.
  • Bulk Analyze and Bulk Tag operate on the vault as a whole, not on a multi-select.

FAQs#

Does Keyword Vault cost credits? No. Nothing on this screen calls a data provider. The credit labels on two of the buttons describe the tool they take you to.

Can my team see my vault? No. Lists are saved to your account and are private to your own sign-in, so they follow you between devices but are not visible to teammates. Share one by exporting a CSV, or keep shared plans in a saved report — see Saved Work.

How many keywords can I save? Up to 500.

What counts as a quick win? A saved keyword with a thousand or more monthly searches and a difficulty of 40 or under. The findings panel counts them for you.

Can I add my own tags? Not currently. The eight tags are fixed: Priority, Quick Win, Long-tail, Branded, Competitor, Content Gap and PPC, plus the All filter.

Will the numbers update as rankings change? No. They are a snapshot from when the keyword was saved or typed. Re-run Keyword Overview when you need current figures.
