Forum & Reddit Visibility
Measures how much your brand is discussed on Reddit and forums, how people feel about it there, and which communities carry the conversation.
Last updated 2026-08-06
Summary#
Forum & Reddit Visibility scans live Reddit threads and forum discussion for a brand or domain and returns a 0-100 visibility score, thread and mention counts, a sentiment split, the communities involved and the threads themselves. Its internal tool id is forum_visibility.
Purpose#
AI answer engines lean heavily on user-generated discussion. When ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI answer recommends a product, the reasoning is often built on Reddit threads and forum posts written by people who have actually used it. A brand with no presence in those communities gives the engines nothing favourable to cite.
This tool exists to answer one question before you spend anything on AI visibility work: is your brand part of the conversation buyers trust, and is that conversation on your side?
Overview#
You enter a brand name or a domain. Metric Vault runs three live measurements in parallel:
- A Google search restricted to Reddit for your brand, read to a depth of 20 results. Every organic result becomes a thread, and the subreddit is parsed out of the URL.
- A content-analysis summary for the brand, which supplies the total mention count across the indexed web.
- A content-analysis search for the brand, read 40 items deep and ordered by rating, filtered down to forum domains only.
A domain counts as a forum if it contains reddit.com, stackexchange.com, stackoverflow.com, quora.com or discourse, or if the domain name itself contains "forum" or "community". Sentiment comes from the connotation values on each matched item, not from a language model guess.
Nothing is invented. If neither the Reddit search nor the forum filter returns anything, the tool says so rather than producing a number.
Benefits#
- Shows the discussion AI engines read, which classic rank tracking never sees.
- Sentiment is measured on real forum items, so a reputation problem shows up as a percentage rather than an anecdote.
- Names the exact subreddits you already appear in, which is where community work should start.
- Works on any brand, so you can scan a competitor that AI keeps recommending.
- Comes with an action plan drawn from the numbers on screen.
Use Cases#
Diagnosing an AI visibility problem. Visibility Overview tells you the engines are not naming you; this tells you whether the source material even exists.
Checking sentiment before a launch. A negative lean in the communities that discuss your category will shape how AI describes you for months.
Finding the right communities. The subreddit table tells you where your category actually talks, so outreach lands somewhere with an audience.
Sizing up a competitor. Scan the rival that keeps getting recommended and see which threads and communities are carrying them.
Reporting on community presence. The visibility score gives a single number you can track from one quarter to the next.
Requirements#
- A signed-in account.
- A paid plan. This tool costs 3 credits, and any cost above zero is refused on Free.
- Enough monthly credits, because at 3 credits it is metered against the monthly quota.
- No integration and no verified domain.
Permissions#
Any workspace member on a paid plan can run it. Free accounts are refused with This tool needs a paid plan. Free includes the 10 technical SEO tools; upgrade to Pro to unlock the rest. A member who is out of monthly credits sees Monthly limit reached — upgrade to continue. in the result area. The recommendations panel under the result needs Pro or above.
Cost#
3 credits per run. Because 3 meets the premium threshold, every run counts against your monthly credit quota rather than only the hourly fair-use limit. A shared-cache hit still charges the 3 credits; the cached window for this tool is two days. See How credits work and Result caching and freshness.
Two things to know about how the cost is displayed: the run button carries no credit chip, and the "You already ran this" dialog reads the cost from a client-side table that does not list this tool, so its Run fresh button can show 1 credit. The charge is 3 either way. Credit cost table is authoritative.

Scanning Reddit and forums for live discussion…. The run takes a few seconds. - Read the header verdict, then the four KPI tiles.
- Work down through the sentiment meters, the communities and the thread list.
- Use Get recommendations if you want the findings turned into a ranked action list, or the export row to take the result out.
Reading the Results#
The header. Your brand on the left, then a metadata line reading N threads, N brand mentions and the sentiment lean — positive, negative or mixed. The lean is deliberately conservative: it only reads positive when the positive share beats the negative share by more than 10 points, and only negative in the mirror case. Anything closer is mixed.
On the right sits the verdict pill:
| Pill | Score | What it means |
|---|---|---|
Highly discussed | 60 or above | Your brand is a real presence in community discussion. Protect it. |
Some presence | 35 to 59 | You exist in the conversation but do not lead it. This is the band most brands land in. |
Low visibility | Under 35 | AI engines have almost nothing community-written to cite about you. |
The four KPI tiles.
| Tile | Sub-label | Reads | Good | Bad | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Visibility score | Reddit + forum presence | Composite of thread volume, mention volume and positive sentiment, 0-100 | 60+ | Under 35 | Below 35, community seeding is the highest-leverage AI-visibility work available to you |
Threads found | Reddit/forum discussions | Distinct threads matched | 10 or more | 0-2 | The score is dominated by this number, so a low count is the first thing to fix |
Brand mentions | across the web | Total mentions from the content-analysis summary | Thousands | Double digits | A high mention count with few threads means you are written about but not discussed |
Positive sentiment | of forum sentiment | Share of matched forum items reading positive | 50%+ | Under 25% with a real negative share | Low positive with high negative is a reputation task, not a marketing one |
The score is weighted so that threads matter most: thread volume contributes up to 50 points, total mentions up to 30 on a logarithmic curve, and positive sentiment up to 20. Adding threads moves the number far faster than adding mentions.
Community sentiment. Three meters — Positive, Neutral, Negative — as percentages of the forum items that carried a sentiment signal. A large neutral share is normal and healthy; it usually means factual mentions. Negative above about 30% is the number to act on, and the recommendations panel flags it as a high-severity finding when it crosses that line.
Where you're discussed. One row per platform group. Reddit shows the Reddit thread count and the single subreddit where you appear most, labelled top:. Forums covers everything matched outside Reddit. If the Forums row is missing entirely, your discussion is Reddit-only, which concentrates your risk in one community's moderation rules.
Top subreddits. A Subreddit and Threads table listing up to six communities, ordered by thread count. This is the most directly actionable block on the page: these are communities where your brand already comes up, so a helpful contribution there is not a cold start. Read a subreddit with several threads as an established venue, and one with a single thread as a signal worth testing.
Recent threads. A table of Thread, Where and Sentiment, showing up to 12 of the threads found. Where is the subreddit when the thread came from the Reddit search, otherwise the forum domain. Threads sourced from the Reddit search are labelled Neutral because that search returns links, not sentiment; only threads matched through content analysis carry a measured sentiment. Read the titles as questions your content should answer, and treat any Negative row as a support ticket you have not received yet.
What this means. Plain-language readings generated from the numbers above — whether the thread count is healthy, and what the sentiment lean implies.
Action plan. Up to four ordered steps, drawn from your own result. When you already appear in subreddits, the first step names the two you appear in most.
What to do with it. If the score is under 35, the work is presence: answer category questions in the communities named, and give customers a reason to mention you. If the score is healthy but sentiment is negative, the work is the complaint pattern in the thread list, and Brand Monitor will show you whether it is spreading beyond forums.
Examples#
Example: You scan notion.so. The header reads 14 threads, 8,400 brand mentions, mixed sentiment, and the pill says Highly discussed at 63/100. Sentiment splits 41% positive, 44% neutral, 15% negative. Where you're discussed shows Reddit with 11 threads, top r/productivity, and Forums with
Top subredditslistsr/productivity(5),r/Notion(4) and
r/ObsidianMD (2) — that last one tells you your brand comes up mainly as the comparison in someone else's community. Recent threads includes two negative rows, both about pricing changes. Your plan: answer the pricing threads honestly, and start contributing in r/ObsidianMD where you are being discussed without being present.

Tips#
- Try the brand name first, then the domain. They return different discussion, and the brand name is usually richer.
- Scan a competitor in the same session. The subreddit lists side by side show you exactly which communities you are absent from.
- Re-run no more than every couple of days. Within the two-day cached window you are charged 3 credits for the same data.
- Take the thread titles into Topic Map or a brief. Community questions make strong headings.
- Use Get recommendations when the sentiment split is bad — it groups the findings into fix-first, do-next and quick wins.
Best Practices#
- Treat the subreddit list as an outreach plan, not a vanity metric.
- Contribute answers, not pitches. Communities remove promotional posts, and a removed post leaves nothing for an AI engine to cite.
- Pair a low score with Prompt & Question Research to learn which questions to answer in those communities.
- Track the visibility score quarterly rather than weekly; community presence moves slowly.
- Export the result before a strategy review so you have the before picture.
Common Mistakes#
- Entering a product name that is also a common word. Matching is substring-based, so a generic brand name pulls in unrelated discussion.
- Reading a
Neutrallabel on a Reddit-sourced thread as measured sentiment. It is a default, not a finding — open the thread. - Assuming a high mention count means healthy visibility. Mentions include the whole indexed web; only threads represent discussion.
- Re-running after a small change and being charged 3 credits for a cached answer.
Limitations#
- The Reddit search and the forum filter always run against the United States, English-language index. The country picker does not change the market.
- The Reddit search is read to a depth of 20 results, so very large brands are sampled rather than counted exhaustively. At most 15 threads are returned and 12 are displayed.
- Coverage is limited to Reddit, Stack Exchange, Stack Overflow, Quora, Discourse forums and domains whose names contain "forum" or "community". Private communities, Discord, Slack and Facebook groups are not visible to it.
- Threads found through the Reddit search carry no measured sentiment.
- This version does not compute a multi-engine AI-citation rate; for citations use AI Citation Tracker.
- Sentiment is derived from connotation scoring on matched pages, so sarcasm and mixed threads can be classified imperfectly.

FAQs#
What exactly is the visibility score? A 0-100 composite. Thread volume contributes up to 50 points, total mention volume up to 30 on a logarithmic scale, and your positive-sentiment share up to
- It measures presence in community discussion, not your Google rank.
Why does Reddit matter more than my blog for AI answers? Answer engines treat community discussion as first-hand experience and cite it heavily when a question is comparative or subjective. Your own pages carry your claims; a Reddit thread carries someone else's verdict.
Can I scan a competitor? Yes. Any brand or domain works. Comparing your subreddit list with theirs is the fastest way to find the communities you are missing.
Why does this cost 3 credits when most AI Visibility tools cost 1? It runs a SERP query plus two content-analysis calls in one pass, so it sits in the medium tier. Because 3 meets the premium threshold, it also counts against your monthly quota. See How credits work.
How often should I re-run it? Every quarter for tracking, or after a campaign aimed at community presence. Results are cached across customers for two days, so a same-week re-run usually returns the same numbers and still costs 3 credits.
Can I export the thread list? Yes. Export PDF, Export Excel, Export CSV and Export JSON sit above the tool, along with Share public link. See Exporting results.
