Brand Monitor
Counts every citation of your brand across the web, splits them by sentiment and channel, samples the actual mentions, and raises alerts when the negative share climbs.
Last updated 2026-08-06
Summary#
Brand Monitor measures how often your brand is cited across the web, how those citations lean, where they sit, and who is publishing them. Enter a brand or a domain and you get a sentiment score, a mention count, a channel mix, real excerpts from real pages, and a short alert list.
Purpose#
Reputation questions arrive as feelings — "people seem unhappy", "we're getting more coverage lately". This tool answers them with counts. It exists so you can tell the difference between a genuine sentiment shift and one loud thread, and so you can point at the channel and the page that caused it.
Overview#
The tool runs three DataForSEO Content Analysis calls in parallel against your term: a summary of every indexed citation, a sample of the highest-scoring citing pages, and a twelve-month phrase-trend series. From that it derives the sentiment split, the channel mix, the mention timeline and the alerts.
Everything on screen comes from measured citations. Nothing is written by a model after the fact. Where a figure is derived rather than measured — reach and share of voice — this article says so.
The screen carries three badges: LIVE · REAL DATA, 4 TOOLS PARALLEL and SENTIMENT + REACH, with a stat strip reading Tools Fired 4, Avg Run Time ~25s, Data Sources 3 and Quota Cost 1.
Benefits#
- Sentiment is computed from the connotation of indexed pages, not estimated.
- You see the actual mention text, source domain and date, not just a total.
- Channel mix separates news from blogs, forums, retail and corporate pages.
- Alerts are generated from thresholds you can reason about, not a black box.
- The whole picture arrives in one run, typically in 20 to 40 seconds.
Use Cases#
- Weekly reputation check. You track sentiment and mention volume on a cadence, and you want a number to compare week to week.
- Post-launch coverage. Something shipped and you need to know who wrote about it and how it landed.
- Negative spike triage. Sentiment dropped and you need the specific pages driving it, ranked by prominence.
- Channel strategy. You discover most coverage sits in one channel and decide to diversify.
- Competitor comparison. Run it on a rival's brand to size their earned coverage against yours.
Requirements#
- A signed-in Metric Vault account.
- A paid plan. Free covers the zero-credit technical tools only.
- Three credits available in your monthly allowance. See How credits work.
- A brand or domain with enough web presence to be indexed. Very new or very local brands often return nothing.
Permissions#
Plan decides access; team role does not.
| Your plan | What happens |
|---|---|
| Free | This tool needs a paid plan. Free includes the 10 technical SEO tools; upgrade to Pro to unlock the rest. |
| Starter and above | Runs normally, while monthly credits remain |

Cost#
3 credits per run, printed on the button as Monitor Brand · 3 reports.
At 3 credits this counts as a premium report and is deducted from your monthly allowance. When the allowance is spent you get the over-quota message instead of a result — see Quotas and rate limits.
The Quota Cost card on the tool page reads 1 with the caption 1 credit per run. That figure is stale; the charge is 3.
A result served from the shared data cache still charges 3 credits. Brand Monitor data is held there for one day, so re-running the same brand the same day returns the same numbers at full price. Re-opening a saved run costs nothing, and See example renders a stored sample for free. See How credits work and Result caching and freshness.

Inputs#
| Field | Accepts | Required | Default | Validation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Main input (e.g. nike.com) | A brand name or a domain | Yes | Empty | Empty input returns Enter a value first. | A brand name and its domain return different citation sets; pick one and stay with it |

Step-by-Step Guide#
- Open
Dashboard → Promote → Brand Monitor. - Press See example first if you want to see the report shape at no cost.

e.g. nike.com. - Click Monitor Brand · 3 reports, or press Enter.

- Read the verdict line, then the KPI rows, then the mention sample.
- Use Export CSV, Export PDF, Add to Watchlist or Set Sentiment Alert from the quick-actions row.
Reading the Results#
The result header shows the brand, a Brand Monitor chip, a Live · DataForSEO badge, the mention count and the reach figure. Below it, one sentence restates the numbers, then a verdict line.
The verdict. Driven entirely by the sentiment score: 60 or above reads Healthy sentiment — Healthy brand health — keep amplifying; 40 to 59 reads Mixed sentiment — Mixed sentiment — investigate negatives; below 40 reads Negative sentiment risk — Negative sentiment risk — act now. Treat 40 as the line where the mention sample stops being interesting and starts being work.
First KPI row.
- Sentiment — a 0-100 score from the positive, neutral and negative connotation counts of every indexed citation. Above 60 is healthy. Below 40 means a large share of what is written about you carries negative connotation, and the Alerts section will already have flagged it.
- Mentions — total indexed citations, with a delta chip comparing the first and last points of the 30-day trend. A negative delta on a healthy sentiment score usually means attention faded, not that anything went wrong.
- Est. Reach — a proxy, not a measurement: the mention count scaled by a fixed per-citation factor. Use it to compare two brands or two months in the same units. Do not quote it as audience.
- Share of Voice — the busiest single citing domain's citations as a share of all citations. The tile is captioned
vs competitors, which overstates it. Read it as concentration: a high number means one publisher carries most of your coverage, which is a fragile position.
Second KPI row. Positive Share and Negative Share are the percentage split of the sentiment breakdown. The small figure beneath each is captioned mentions but is the same percentage restated, not a mention count — read the tile value and ignore the caption. Top Channel names the channel carrying the most mentions. Active Alerts counts the issues raised below.
Sentiment Breakdown draws the positive, neutral and negative split as a donut. A wide neutral band is normal — most indexed pages mention a brand without opinion. What matters is the ratio of positive to negative inside the remainder.
Channels ranks the mention count per channel. Channels come from the page types the index assigns: News, Blogs, Forums, Retail / Ecommerce and Org / Corporate. If one channel holds more than half your mentions, an alert fires, because single-channel coverage disappears when that channel moves on.
Mentions by Sentiment is the 30-day trend. When the index does not hold enough daily citations to build a timeline, the panel says so: No 30-day mention trend yet — DataForSEO needs more daily citations to build a timeline. Try the 24M / 5Y range or check back tomorrow. That is an honest empty state, not a failure.
Top Mentions Sample is the most valuable panel. Each row is a real citing page: source domain, platform tag, sentiment tag, a reach figure derived from the page's rank, the date, and a 240-character excerpt. When sentiment drops, this is where you find out why. Work from the top; the sample is ordered by the index's own page score.
Top Influencers lists the domains citing you most. One caveat: the count shown next to each entry is labelled followers but is the domain's citation count, not an audience size. Read it as "how often this site writes about you".
Channel Leaderboard is a table captioned reach × mentions × sentiment with the columns Channel, Mentions, Est. Reach, Sentiment and Share. The Share bar is the one to read — it shows each channel's percentage of all mentions. The Sentiment column repeats the single overall sentiment score on every row rather than scoring each channel separately, so ignore it here and use the Sentiment Breakdown donut instead.
Co-mentioned Keywords shows the domains most associated with your term as pills — useful for spotting which sites own your brand conversation.
The header and quick-action buttons. Refresh re-runs the tool on the same brand and charges another 3 credits. Export CSV and Export PDF route through the standard export engine. Add to Watchlist and Set Sentiment Alert both store their setting in your browser's local storage only — the watchlist is a per-browser list of brand names, and the sentiment threshold is recorded but does not send you a notification. For alerting that actually reaches you, use Rank alerts and Scheduled reports.
Alerts closes the report. They are built server-side from real thresholds: negative sentiment at or above 40% raises a high-severity alert with a recommendation to investigate the highest-reach negative mentions; 25% to 39% raises a medium one; a channel holding more than half of all mentions raises a concentration alert; and a low-severity line always records the total tracked.
Brand Monitor has no Get recommendations panel — no recommendation rule is defined for it. See Get Recommendations for the tools that do.
Examples#
Example: You run notion.so. Sentiment reads 71, Mentions 4,180 with a +12% 30-day delta, Est. Reach 50.2K, Share of Voice 9%. Positive Share is 38%, Negative Share 7%, Top Channel Blogs with 2,010 mentions, Active Alerts 2. The alerts flag that blogs carry over half of all citations, and record the total. Your read: sentiment is healthy and volume is rising, but the coverage is concentrated in one channel. You open Top Mentions Sample, note the five highest-reach blogs, and use Influencer Analysis to find news and organization outlets in the same niche to diversify into.

e.g. nike.com inputTips#
- Run the brand name and the domain separately once. Whichever returns the richer mention sample is the term to keep using.
- Schedule the run rather than relying on the in-result alert button — see Scheduled reports. The Set Sentiment Alert button only records a threshold in your browser.
- Export CSV before a reporting cycle. The mention sample is what makes a reputation slide credible.
- Watch the Share of Voice concentration figure over time. Rising concentration is a risk even when sentiment is fine.
Best Practices#
- Compare like with like. Country, range and input term are all part of the cache key, so change one at a time.
- Quote Mentions and Sentiment externally; keep Est. Reach and Share of Voice for internal trend work, since both are derived.
- Pair it with Brand Perception & Narrative when you need to know what is being said, not just how much and how positively.
- Run the whole set through Brand Health when you want AI visibility, perception, media and social alongside these numbers in one pass.
Common Mistakes#
- Reading Est. Reach as audience. It is a scaled mention count.
- Reading Share of Voice as market share. It measures how concentrated your coverage is in one domain.
- Reading the influencer counts as followers. They are citation counts.
- Trusting the
Quota Cost 1card. The run costs 3 credits. - Re-running the same brand repeatedly in a day. The shared cache holds the data for a day, so you pay 3 credits for identical numbers.
Limitations#
- Coverage is the DataForSEO Content Analysis index of web pages. It is not a social listening product: there is no X, Instagram, TikTok or YouTube API behind it.
- The mention sample is capped at 12 rows; influencers and co-mentioned keywords at 8 and 10.
- Reach and share of voice are proxies derived from citation counts.
- The
Share of Voice vs Competitorssection only appears when a competitor time-series exists, and the index does not currently expose one, so in practice it does not render. - Sentiment is connotation analysis of page text, so sarcasm and context are not understood.
- Add to Watchlist and Set Sentiment Alert are browser-local. They are not synced to your account, not shared with teammates, and do not notify anyone.
- Refresh in the result header is a full re-run and costs 3 credits again.
Troubleshooting#
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
No measured data was found for "…" | The brand has no citations in the index | Check the spelling, or try the other form of the term (name instead of domain). See A tool returned no data |
Enter a value first. | The input is empty | Type a brand or domain and run again |
Please sign in to run this tool. | Signed out | Sign in and retry |
| No 30-day trend chart | Too few daily citations to build a timeline | Expected. Widen the range or re-run another day |
| Identical numbers to this morning's run | The shared cache holds this tool for one day | Expected. See Result caching and freshness |
You've used all N premium reports… | Monthly allowance spent | Wait for the reset date shown, or upgrade. See I ran out of credits |
FAQs#
Should I enter my brand name or my domain? Either. A name catches coverage that never links to you; a domain catches pages citing your site. Most teams track the name and check the domain occasionally.
Does this monitor social media? No. It reads an index of web pages — news, blogs, forums, retail and corporate sites. For social follower and engagement data use Social Analytics; for Reddit and forum threads specifically use Forum & Reddit Visibility.
Why did my sentiment score move without my mention count changing? The index re-crawls continuously, and connotation is recomputed on the pages it holds. Small movements between runs are normal; a swing of ten points or more is worth opening the mention sample for.
Does a cached result still cost credits? Yes. A shared-cache hit charges the full 3 credits. Re-opening your own saved result from Saved Work is free, and See example is free.
Can I run it on the Free plan? No. It needs a paid plan, and at 3 credits it is metered against your monthly premium allowance rather than running unmetered like the 1-credit tools.
Can I get alerted automatically? Not from this screen. Set Sentiment Alert and Add to Watchlist save to your browser only and send nothing. For delivery on a cadence, use Scheduled reports.
